Pink Floyd (Etc)

For Christmas 1977 my late Mum got me Pink Floyd's "Animals" & "Wish you were here" on cassette tape as my main present, i had just become a teenager a couple of months earlier. I'am guessing She must have popped into the local Our Price record shop & asked for suggestions. I'am eternally grateful to whoever that person was, as ever since i have had my life shaped around Pink Floyds music.

Since those early teenage years i have gone on to see hundreds of live gigs & go to loads of festivals. AC/DC at the old Hammersmith Odeon with Bon Scott on the Highway to Hell tour December 1979 was my first gig & Glastonbury 1981 was the first of many festivals. I hitched there & back with my Best Mate & really had my eyes opened that weekend at 16.

Alas, i never did see Pink Floyd perform live, my Mate did. I have seen Roger Waters perform "Dark side of the Moon" at Earls Court in 2007 & "The Wall" at Wembley in 2013.

So to get my Floyd fix i have been going to see Brit Floyd, Think Floyd & the Australian Pink Floyd, all excellent tribute bands, over the last few years at diferent venues over the south of England. Its the best i can do.

I just wondered if anyone else has got a band that has had an influence on their life so far?

Floyd have been in the 'background' all through my musical fadsover the years, never been lucky enough to see them live unfortunatly but would love too
There was a brief spell with statusquo (but Iam better now

I've never seen a tribute band, although I've seen the 'Australian Pink Floyd' advertised all over the place

I think Animals, yea that one, in fact I was only playing it just the other day, when it came out I sold audio systems as a job and it was one of small collection of 'demo' records to help me sell the equipment

Never seen a tribute band! I'am suprised. Some of them are really very good. I think it all depends on how pure you want things to be. My best Mate is a avid Hawkwind Fan, seen them over 120ish times, i've seen them 25 times & the line up has changed several times over apart from Dave Brock. Sometimes i almost think of them as their own tribute band.

Yes, i do like my music loud, spent a lot of my life at Metal/Thrash gigs & coupled with a life of working in very noisy factories, my hearing has suffered. But i don't think i could do it as a job, it would take the pure enjoyment side out.

Was listening to a bit of nostalgic Floyd on Sunday with a few friends, but it's best listened to in a more 'refreshed' state I think.

Mrs Rubberrats brother is a massive fan and treks across continents to see the few survivors when they play.

I just like live music & everything that goes with it. Getting excited about going, meeting up with Friends for a catch up over pre gig drinks, the gig, more beer, you get the idea.

Saw Chas & Dave pre christmas, seen them loads, always a good night out. Two weeks ago it was a Northern Soul night with a guest DJ slot from Don Letts (much Ska) & this saturday was Think Floyd, again.

I hadnt even given Entertainment at the Social a thought. Too small an affair anyway. Lets just leave it at Real Ale & conversation.
