New member introducing myself.

Hi all.

It's been nearly a year since I bought a Toyota Hilux and a Tischer Trail 260S demountable camper. Thoroughly enjoying using it.

I knew we were buying a niche product in the UK, but I don't think I realised just now niche. In the times we have been away in it this year, we have only seen 2 demountables on a camp site, both foreign, seen I think 3 others pass by in the distance, and only once passed one, also another Tischer on the A838 around Loch Eribol.

Being a nich product does not bother me much, until it comes to the annual issue, insurance. I will post on that separately.

Good evening Dave welcome.

No they aren't common, which is likely increases interest in owning one here,
Germany especially, then probably France have the largest supply of used units and we've seen probably as many tourists here using them as UK owners.
Because of rarity in UK insurance cover can be difficult to find with brokers unable to understand any camper vehicle without any wheels,
You might try Howden insurance they insure mine, home and away, on or off Hilux. think I spoke to a Ben Edwards last time I renewed

This time last year we had paid the deposit and started the search for insurance before completion. I started with a list of potential insurers from Nolan of NSR and phoned them all, and one by one they declined to quote for a demountable. Howdens were on that list and were no longer quoting quoting for new policies. Several others were also not quoting for new.

Last year it boiled down to just 2 quotes, NFU who quoted a separate policy for the truck and the camper, and Just Kampers who quoted for the pair on one policy.

This time the Camping and caravan club have quoted but for 2 separate policies again, and not found any other new ones, so will likely renew with Just Kampers.

The only other option is just insure the truck, but that's a lot of money to have sitting on the back, uninsured and could be a big loss if the worst happened.

Hmm,
Howden I think had another division called A-plan, might be worth clarifying that with them again.
NFU historically offered cover but as a franchise nationally one branch will be happy to quote, a neighbouring county may not, I don't remember now which branch was the good one.

Kampers I don't know but if you choose them I'll add them to our insurance thread as a possible.
most of them anyway insist on covering both truck and camper usually, camper outside at home might be included on home insurance
but as you say you need it covered by someone all the time, and will probably include a tracker on it somewhere, though I've not yet heard of one being taken
though that's as much there rarity as anything else makes them unattractive compared to a caravan

It was a Howden branch in Wales I tried (not surprising as given to me by Nolan) I could try my local branch, or perhaps you could let me know which branch you use?

Just Kampers insisted on a tracker, supplied by them but fitted to the truck. I can't see someone pinching the camper from it's legs on my drive without the truck, but one of the insurers insisted it is secured when demounted obviously thinking of a caravan wheel lock.

I have had a few discussions over wheels with prospective insurers as I think most owners have, tracker on vehicle yes, but usually these days another somewhere about camper,

With so few of these in UK it would be very difficult to move on, advertising it nationally it would quickly appear on here and be recovered, the sales thread works with alerts set up here and Europe

I have made an enquiry to Howdens. The agent is looking into it for me, but here I think is the nub of the problem. She had never heard of a demoutable and does not know which of the many insurers they use will cover them.

Any chance you could post the name of the actual insurance company that insures yours through Howdens? That might make it easier by pre arming them with where to look?
