Re: plywood base
I have a polyethylene load liner so I plonk the camper straight onto that. Because I built my own rig, this height also coincides with the upper level resting on the load liner on the top edges of the buck. I think it's very important to make sure the user level rests on the buck to reduce the potential for sideways rocking on rough roads. My previous rig, the Northstar was too high so I fitted a piece of 3x2 cls down each side of the buck to eliminate the gap and keep rocking to a minimum.

I have plywood not loose in the truck bed but fixed to the camper base.l used this to
give height clearance for truck roof bars also helps with clearance if I leave the tailgate on.

Re: plywood base
I did on my L200/Apollo rig as I had clearance issues over the cab. Don't on the Defender/Northstar as:
1, there was more clearance over the cab,
2, chassis flexes less and
3, at 3.05m its high enough already!
