I'm just about due to replace my tyres and also considering re-plating the truck. I was going to go for BFG AT tyres that everyone seems to recommend, but I've also seen people suggesting that you need tyres with a load rating of 112 or 114 for re-plating to 3500Kg, whereas the ATs are only rated at 108, which as you say equates to 1000Kg per wheel, so presumably limits rear axle to 2000Kg. Does that sound OK?

Hi Sherif, ideally your replacement tyres should match the gross weight of the (highest) axle weight (in most cases the rear axle)
E.g. if your (highest) axle weight shown on the chassis plate is 1900kg, then a tyre load of 108 (two tyres at 1000kg = 2000kg load capacity) is sufficient to cover this axle weight.
However, if you're going to re-plate your vehicle (and therefore increase the axle weight) you need tyres with a load to match the new axle weight. e.g. A new axle weight of 2200kg needs a tyre load of 112 (1120kg each capacity).

Thanks for that explanation FinAde. My objective is to increase the gross weight of my rear axle so it can comfortably carry my sKarosser plus camping load - current rear axle rating is 1750Kg. I'd like to stick with 108 rated tyres if poss as it gives me more choice and lets me use BFG ATs @ 108. So my decision really depends on whether a rear axle re-rated at 2000Kg is enough for this. If so, there's no point in getting it re-plated at a higher load rating.

Hi Sherrif,

I've just been through this process with SvTech for my Amarok. I needed 112 tyres which were fortunately already fitted.
I would suggest you phone them - 01772 621800. Online form and emails go unanswered, communication is not their strong point!
Speak to Gareth, the Sales Manager. He will be able to tell you about the tyre rating you need.
If you go down this route with SvTech you will need to chase them regularly.

The new rating plate on our Amarok, has to be located as close to the original as possible - our Airbag plate is next to the original so it had to go here.

Just waiting for the DVLA to do their bit with the V5.

Weighpads weigh around 30kg each so may have to leave them behind in lieu of beer, wine and sausages 8-)

Re. SvTech: I emailed Gareth about customer service and received the following reply:

Afternoon Chris

“Thank you for your email and my sincere apologies that the service has been less than expected.
In my own admission, the buck stops with me, and I am to blame for the delays.
SvTech is only a small family run firm and we are processing about 200 vehicle applications a month.
Being the only person in the office with knowledge on the Pickup uprates, has meant the applications have landed on my desk.
Without trying to lay excuses, as I’m sure I’ve given a few, the pure quantity of work combined with vehicle testing has meant my time management has gone out of the window, with apparent failings to customer service.
I can only apologies to you and the forum readers for this.
I take on board all of the comments and should there ever be a delay with an application, I would sooner be hounded, than let a customer down.”
Please feel free to post my reply to the forum and have I am more than happy to discuss any concerns the readers may have.

Well done for complaining, Chris. I had been thinking about doing it myself. He was always honest about who was causing the delays when we finally got through to him, so fair shout. And we (Amarok owners) did get the job done without having to take the vehicle to them for inspection :)

TYRES

After reading some of the posts above I was a bit concerned about the rating of the 265-75-16 BFG A/T's on my Defender. On checking they are marked with a load rating of 120 so should be fine. Do they vary in load rating even in the same size?

The answer would be yes and no :). It varies between tyre manufacturers, tyre types and sizes the maufacturer offers. e.g Michelin offer a 4x4/suv tyre 265/65x17 with the following load index options 110, 112 & 116. But with their 4x4/SUV tyre 275/65x17 they only offer one load rating of 115.
Your local friendly tyre supplier .....will have all the answers :) hopefully!
