Well
local garage couldn't diagnose with their gear so it will have to go into a specialist week after next now for more detailed inspection,
still usable so I'm mobile, just not as it should be & with a trip to Cornwall at month end we need it back to normal
I'll post up result of their diagnostic when I have it

pity as I was hoping for something quick to fix :x

So it didn't leave a fault code? The issue could still be in the towing wiring, but because of the engine management problem, it could be ECU.

Ok then, dealers are checking it over tomorrow,
I normally avoid them at (all) costs but they should know the fault codes where as a diesel place might be unfamiliar with Toyota especially

It will be the quickest way to a diagnosis.

So,
It is electrical,
Dealer was less than useful and I did impress this on them at collection.
They say:
Speedo is flying across to max because the sensor that counts spinning cogs in the gearbox is 'maybe' bust, either way they are unable to test it because it's an aftermarket part.

Hilux came with a Tachograph fitted, and it seems it's own sensor,
Essentially they want £200 to 'try' a sensor and see,
I said go and pull one off a forecourt car and i'll pay labour instead and maybe save much of that,
They didn't agree, some bad words got said, I just unplugged the tacho here at home and although car drives as it should again, there's no speedo and dealers has tripped the engine light on.

I'm easily pleased normally, and it's only putting myself in the same room as people like this causes a problem so in a way I blame myself.

So in fact half fixed (the important half too)
And i'll perhaps see if I can track down a speed sensor cheaply, either that or a ninja outfir and torch for later on

At least you are closer to a solution.

Are there any being broken for spares on eBay?

If you need to reset your engine light I can send you my code reader

thats kind of you I might well take you up on that if its an issue tomorrow,
on the plus side I've noticed the seatbelt buzzer has also been deleted and I don't miss that at all.

was hoping that behind tacho there might be a simple interruption in the speedo cable (I think I have it actually)
but not found two ends that need joining
might be a ring around the breakers maybe if I can identify this speedo sensor

not seemingly conected to tacho, disappears up below dash, has a single button which illuminates a red led inside this mouse shaped device, and an audible click somewhere deep behind dashboard too,

when pushed I can't see any display or other setting alter on dashboard,
