I did see on an adventure camper the use of what looked a little like a shortened shock absorber which worked in reverse (so expansion)
our member 'Keef' has used them on a Northstar once,

It would've be my dream set up especially since my Northstar brackets were at the right points, I just couldn't justify the cost.

Thought I'd just see how you are getting on with the repair work? It came to mind as I dropped around at my mates last night - he has a Navara and it was his truck that we put onto the ramps to see just what was causing the problem with the chassis.

- It seems accountants were to blame (as always) the chassis under the cab is tough and well built, then gets very thin and spindly towards the rear. Built to do the intended job with zero margin.

Seems easy to make up a long laser cut plate to strengthen it though.

He's selling his '07 Navara and I was tempted (The price is very right). Now we know what the issues are they can be corrected in advance. But my old Chevy seems to keep plodding along so I'll stick with the old girl.

Apparently the D44 has an issue with the timing chain - not heard of that, but he spends a lot of time o the Navara forums as he runs the local garage. The last chain is simplex, but there is a duplex kit out to cure the problem before it happens.
Seems that if the chain fails then its catastrophic - valve impact and no rockers to break first so its valves into pistons :o

Does this look familiar?

I didnt want to say anything until I was sure it was all coming to pass. My insurance company is paying for the repairs. I will need to pay the excess as its deemed a fault accident claim but I have protected no claims bonus so that is safe.

You gan get the duplex timing chain kits for around £700 but then you have to fit them.

There is a company who come VERY highly recomended on http://www.nissan-navara.net/ that do the job for you for around £1000.

Thats good news mate, glad they agreed, but as with most things demount related, its a little outside the usual for them I expect.
good idea keeping it quiet until its all agreed I wouldv'e done too.

what will the repair comprise of, extra plating across that point?

How spookily alike does the chassis break pic in that link look compared to yours!

Seems the repair needs to have considerable length to allow a little torsional twist. And needs to be stich welded not seamed all the way around.

Glad it's underway, fantastic that your insurance had come up with paying for repair too isn't it, I didn't expect that.

My mate has already bought that duplex kit, but not fitted it, it will come with the truck. Should I shouldn't I ?

I come from 'the devil you know' school of thought. I'll talk to him again and talk numbers, he wants me to buy a Scimitar SE6 off him too. Not my cup of tea, I didn't like the one I had when I was 20 something, but let's see.

Should we have a poll ?
I'm firmly in the 'don't fix it camp' myself if you are OK with what you have. I don't anticipate swapping mine in immediate future anyway

Grant,

Can you please let me know how you get on with the repair company & ask them how much it would cost to strengthen my chassis ?
I'm keen to get this done before rather than after the event. As for the Duplex kit, I'm only low teens mileage wise on my truck with another 2yrs of warranty to go. So I'll wing it for now rather than spend a grand at this early stage, after all they only recommend that they're changed after 60k. Did the repair company say how long it would take to fix ?

Of course I will mate. They seem to know their stuff and have done repairs on demountable owners trucks before.

As far as the timing chain goes and don't quote me on this its just the MK1'ns that have the problem. I believe as yours is a MK2 its ok.

They reckon it'll take a week!

The biggest problem is getting it straight again. They take the buck off and put it on a jig before they weld it. He was talking about putting box section inside the rail to start with. Not sure how that would be done. Then seam welding the crack. Then welding on fish plate on both sides and top.
