Weight distribution

I know that weight up high and further back is not good especially on a double cab. But do we have anyone that can calculate the actual effect if a camper was mounted 75mm further back than normal?

I have been playing with the mounting position today leaving the tail gate on and not interfering with the stop straps and the option is either camper up or camped back or a bit of both.

I'm thinking camper up would be the best option.

Just after thoughts :?

I think about this for exactly the same reason but TBH every time I drop the tailgate off and drive truck without it, the drastic change in handling reminds me just how heavy that gate is

(and how far back that weight occurs more to the point)

wouldn't know about the mathematics, but wasn't there a picture of a camper with its centre of gravity actuallly marked on here the other week

75mm does not sound like much, but unless you are using a camper on a single cab with an 8ft bed so its centre of gravity is well forwards of the rear axle, even that 75mm movement is likely to affect weight distribution and handling negatively.

I always remove my tailgate - it is a load of extra weight exactly where you don't want it. Plus the tailgate when flat isn't designed to take the weight of your camper - it isn't just the static weight you need to think about, but when you go over a bump on the motorway and the camper tries to pivot backwards, that weight will be taken by the tailgate.

So is your problem just interference with the tailgate? If so then I'd say 100% remove the tailgate so you can mount the camper as far forwards and as low as possible. If the tailgate is a red herring and the alternative is structurally modifying your truck load bed then that is more of a problem. A couple of pictures would help.

Steve.

Apart from airbags what are the alternatives, heavy duty springs which I am guessing would make the un loaded ride harsh, spring helpers, has anyone tried any of these??

My issue is I'm currently running two trucks one for the camper and one for work.

I want to go down to one truck. I have negotiated that I don't need to refit the hard top for work but I would need to leave the tailgate on.

With the current setup the tailgate doesn't take any weight from the camper but the retaining straps are in the way.

If I remove the straps the tailgate drops onto the bumper but the paint work is getting damaged.

I'm trying to find a solution but it looks like I'll have to raise the camper as I'm not happy moving it back.

Raising it is not ideal as the cog would be higher and it's a bigger climb to get in.

I may end up keeping both trucks but don't want to rearly.
