Got my new rig back home tonight with no major problems. Dark when I got home so I was not able to have a good check round . First on my list is tyres . The back ones are old and cracking. I may want to replace the truck so will need higher load tyres . The steel rims on the Ranger are 14" . Am I better looking for some bigger second hand alloys for a different choice or sticking to 14" steels.
Thanks Jim

I'm not sure on the rim side of things. But on the tyres I got the new BFG AT's which were released last July. The load rating is 118 & the new pattern boasts to be quieter on the road, longer life & better off road due to the new side wall design. Of course being a premium tyre they come at a premium price. I managed to get mine for £135.00 per corner inc. vat & delivery, which I thought wasn't too bad.

I've been very pleased with the BFGoodrich AT KOs I have - they are the older ones of course, but they are very strong. No problem with that sharp black volcanic shards of rock you get in the desert. Much higher load rating than the tyres fitted as standard.
These are on Ford Ranger 16 inch alloy rims. I think these rims are wider than the steel ones - something to consider if upgrading rims.
If I was replacing the rims I'd personally prefer to stick to OEM Ford rims. I've seen a number of people in the US who have replaced OEM rims with after market ones only to find they have cracked under the load of a camper. Maybe that is not the case with European manufacturers. My suspicion is that most customers buying replacement rims buy them for the look and probably don't carry much load on their trucks, so aftermarket manufacturers may not think as much about strength as the truck manufacturer who probably has a much bigger fear of reputational damage so I suspect puts more effort into structural design and testing.
Steve.
