Ranger gauges not working

Post: # 10818Post Big Jim

Hi have any of you Ford Ranger (2005) had this problem ?
The truck has stood for about a week . I turned the ignition on and the gauges did a little dance , then I started it . Now the fuel , temp , rev counter and odometer don't work, ever this else does . All fuses ok , but PTC relay is missing .The battery is a bit duff , but does start it ok and charges off the alternator . Sounds like a common feed has broken ? Any ideas ?Any one got a wiring diagram ?
Thanks Jim

Don't know Rangers especially but If it was me I would start with both earth connection from negative post of battery onwards, usually screwed to inner swing, pop that off, clean it up and replace it
and the ignition key barrel as thats one of the few moving parts that can wear and cause intermittent problems.

Both of those as you are confident it isn't a battery issue after all (which would always be my first port of call) especially as we enter Winter here

well if its nothing obvious like a fuse blown as result something rubbing and shorted out then i would be inclined to check the battery
in cold weather they are much more likely to cause all sorts of elctrical glitches than they might at any other time pof the year

Thanks for the replies.
Minor update . I have discovered that the speedo is also dead. The weather here is putting me off doing too much .
I am trying to join the Ranger forum , but haven't had a response to my application yet.

Well i've done a couple of searches on here back to 2013 and TBH there isn't much like your problem that I've seen as yet,

individuals like fuel gauge down to a corroded connector externally, and an immobiliser issue elsewhere, but aside from collecting water in drivers footwell and shorting the ECU not so much here, I'm still going with battery myself and as soon as it stops raining Iexpect hope you'll be able to confirm
