Whilst not my demountable thought i would share a pic or 2 of the tin worm in the Navarra, its off to the body shop monday for all this to be cut out and repaired. I think what happens is water collects in the plastic wheel arch trims along with mud etc. Oh well cheaper than a new motor!

Well at least you caught it while there's something to weld too!
Our Fourtrack looks a little like that inside rear wheel arches, but like all Daihatsu keeps running till the motor falls on the floor,
Remember that nissan should be 'gleaming' for its close-up in June,

My old Isuzzu did the same - was an import model with the spats and it collected the water. if you looked at vauxhall bravas (same car different badge) they were fine

Well it has now been back home for me to fit the sockets for the wheel arch fixings which meant drilling holes in the newly filled rear wings. The man who is doing the repair suggested to drill the holes before he finished sprays, good idea. Didn't take long about 30mins to fit them all, so its back in the shop now should be done in a week or so. Will take pics when finished.

Pretty sure this is where I connected the front straps to down between cab/tub to that bracket

Umm - surprising amount of rot! Looks as if it must have been a real mud trap.
That's one of the benefits of the Land Rover. The body is built of Birmabrite alloy and its never going to rust as such, however, there can be some issues with galvanic corrosion where the alloy is mounted to the steel chassis - especially if there is a bad earth connection!
Unfortunately alloy isn't always the best material for the Defender's skin. The bottom of the doors, which have a steel frame under the alloy, often rot out due to design issues and lack of rust proofing. There is a good trade in replacement Defender doors - supply and demand means that replacements are easy and relatively cheap.
Defenders built from 2007 have all steel doors and they are rust treated before painting. They don't seem to suffer any issues - yet!

I think, if my schoolboy physics is still in my head somewhere that the problem was due to galvanic corrosion, mixed metals (steel & aluminium) rather like those in a battery.Unfortunately alloy isn't always the best material for the Defender's skin. Add water and salt (like every winter on British roads) and the electrical corrosion begins. Aluminium is highly corrosive in fact, it always creates an oxidised surface covering when exposed.

People even go the extent & expense of fitting the same devices as on hull of ship (to attract corrosion) then renew them as they disintegrate!

Re the fixing points thats exactly where I bolted the ring bolt to, easy on the near side as I could get to both sides of the chassis, the drivers side the ring will be welded on whilst its being sprayed. Will take pics when its back. Actually bought some ratchet straps today from machine mart 3000kg break spec, think that should hold it, probably the chassis will break before they do!
Re landrovers yes had several all had signs of galvanic rust, but somehow never looked too bad, just in keeping with that sort of vehicle. Chassis rot now thats a whole different story!!!
