New Mitsubishi L200

Post: # 7924Post Madmountainman

Just popped into a dealers today and sat in one. It's now gone from being the most cramped driving position to one of the best. I'm going to be looking at a test drive next, in order to see if I can get anywhere near their claimed 43mpg!
Anyone heard anything good or bad about the new one, please post here.

I always thought the last model was an exercise in style over function, but failed on both counts. That said, I've owned a couple of Shoguns in the past and they were pretty indestructible.

why the pronounced step in trust between the shogun (good)
while the L200 (hmmm) ?

do they not share common components and manufacture?

I believe the original L200's had different running gear to the Shogun's, and those were the one's that got a reputation for self imploding engines.
This new L200 has a brand new 2.4, aluminium engine. The only worry is that Mitsubishi don't appear to have much faith in it as the new L200 has a 5 year warranty, but only for 62.5K on the engine! :o

L200 had completely different running gear to Shogun, no idea why when they were produced in parallel, but L200s suffered many engine failures, where Shoguns seemed impossible to break.
62.5k miles is 1000k kms so I presume an arbitrary figure.

I wonder why the likes of Kia and Skoda don't make pickups. Both of these were the butt of jokes in the automotive world, now both world beaters. I would have thought the utility market would have been perfect for them both.

Went to the open day today and had a lovely pork bap!
We were only allowed a short drive but initial impressions are good. In ten miles, on a reset trip meter, I had the average up to 38mpg, so I reckon a long drive will see it over 40 easily.
I felt that it was both smoother over the bumps and quieter than the Ford Ranger, with a more comfortable seating position too. Though you do need to go to Warrior and/or Barbarian spec for the electric seats, which give you a huge range of adjustment compared to the manual seats in the cheaper models.
I was told the new engine's Euro 6, but i've still not seen that in writing anywhere, and that you're better off with the 6 speed manual rather than the 5 speed auto, which is reputedly noisier. I also felt that the gear change was both smoother and more positive than the Ranger's.
It's still early days as yet, due to waiting on the Hi-Lux, but it's the current No 1 contender.

One thing that was mentioned by the salesman was changes to the VED tax rates for light commercials. I've had a google and can't find any info, but the salesman said that rates were looking like they'd be doubling if your pickup's over 179ish grammes of CO2. I've not managed to find any news on this, so have asked for more information, as I don't fancy buying a Ranger or D-Max only to find in a couple of years that my tax rate's gone from £225 to around £500.
Does anyone here have any knowledge of forthcoming change to commercial vehicle tax rates? Any news I get, i'll update here.

Couple of thoughts Rich, whichever you go for there a re a couple of peculiarities to demountable's worth thinking;

Air suspension, is there either a kit made for pickup, or an existing model that will adapt easily to fit a new truck,

Rear camera, lots of trucks feature a sat nav centrally on dashboard, many of which the manufacturer will offer a camera to display rear view when reverse is selected, easier to procure at POS, a devil to obtain aftersales

might be a camera in tailgate, so you can disable that or switch it maybe (in use remove tailgate anyway) and substitute it with short range transmitter on camper (popular addition here)
